After School Arts !!!!!

February 1, 2011 by

We have started our Thursday meetings at the Memorial Building again. It’s nice to be back and closer to the TV Studios of BevCam. So far we have been working on clay bowls for dips or ice cream although some students have chosen to make a tea cup or a plate. We have also started plotting our next musical for the fall called ChiCOWgo. An udderly ridiculous MOOsical. The first verse is done for the opening song. These cows have something to say! They even have an important message. Would love to have some more students join us to help develop this Moosical.

“The Tale of the Oysta” premieres on December 9!

November 26, 2010 by

The excitement is building as the North of Boston Arts Center (NOBAC) enters the final weeks of rehearsals before it presents its third youth-cast production, “The Tale of the Oysta: A Seafaring Whoops!,” at the Pingree School in South Hamilton, MA, on December 9 and 10 at 7:00 PM and on December 11 and 12 at 2:00 PM. In the past year, the NOBAC brought the North Shore its youth productions of “The Magic Flute” and “The Aristocats,” but this show is a little different.

“The Tale of the Oysta: A Seafaring Whoops!, “was not written by Mozart or McGowan & Rowe, but by its cast of 5 to 13 year-old children. Henry Allen, the NOBAC’s perennial show director, united these young talents in a summer playwriting workshop and guided the writing of the script. Bonnie Rynkowski, the NOBAC’s founding director, served as choreographer and music director. According to both directors, the kids took the reins.

“Today’s children are two or more generations removed from the Great American Songbook,” says Henry Allen. “Much of this music was born out of a time of economic depression and war, and so we find that the songs have as much relevance and freshness today as they did 80-plus years ago. It was amazing to see the excited reaction the children had to this music when introduced to it for the first time! They took to it immediately, and created a wonderfully clever show born completely out of the music. The North of Boston Arts Center is committed to keeping this uniquely American art form alive and vital to our culture, and it starts at the foundation. It starts with our children.”

Inspiring the story itself, the great music of Cole Porter and George & Ira Gershwin is woven throughout this jazzy nautical tale of Shelly Oysta – a poor girl who dreams of a better life aboard the glimmering yachts of Cape Ann. In the NOBAC tradition, the cast will be accompanied by professional musicians, headed up by North Shore jazz great Nat Simpkins.

The world premiere of Oysta will be at Pingree School, 537 Highland Street, South Hamilton, MA, with performances on December 9 and 10 at 7:00 PM and on December 11 and 12 at 2:00 PM.

The Tale of the Oysta! A Sea Faring Whoops is the title of our unbelievably awesome upcoming ORIGINAL Production, written by our Students.  They wrote it in a class called Playwrites Unite over the summer.  It is based on the music of Cole Porter and George and Ira Gershwin.  We have started rehearsals and are welcoming additional chorus members who can come to rehearsals on Thursdays from 4-6.  Fun and frolick with singing and dancing.  Check thenobac.org or call NOBAC-8-0033 if you know any 5-13 yr. olds who love to be on stage.  Our preschool class called Budding Artists Mondays from 9:30-11:30 has started, is a big hit, and still has spaces available.  Get into the ARTS!

NOBAC keeping busy

June 15, 2010 by

We barely have recouped from the marvelous Magic Flute Opera by our spectacular cast (is that too proud?) and then we went right into the BevCam Studio to tape a great followup forum.   The Cast came and answered questions, told the story and even sang a few accapella hits from the Magic Flute.  I can only say wow!  I’ll let you know when that will be on.  We plan on airing the whole show a little later.   Now onto Summer.   Arts Festival Sat. June 19,  check our booth for free face painting, and decorate a visor.   Jazz for Dads, June 20 @ Chiantis 286 Cabot St Beverly with brunch and Jazz entertainment extraordinaire! Artsy Campy Days, our 4 day camp start Monday at 12:30 then Tu/We/Th at 9. Can’t beat this camp for the price and all ARTS activities. Hands on with electric guitars on Tues and Thurs.  Then Henry Allen gets going with “Budding Artists” and “To Play’s the Thing” and “Playwrites Unite”  Were hoping we get the first Beverly Idol off the ground too!  Our Summer Showcase is August 7th at Lynch Park.  Get ready for Summer Fun!

Bravo! for Opening Night of “The Magic Flute”

May 21, 2010 by

Opening night of NOBAC’s youth production of “The Magic Flute” was wonderful – our cast and crew brought Mozart’s beloved opera to life and showed that the NOBAC kids can really put on a show! To borrow an analogy from the baseball world, they really knocked one out of the park! Our young students performed “with valor and honor” (as the Spirits instruct Prince Tamino to do in his quest for love and truth and Princess Pamina) to create transcendent, lovely moments that gave us goose bumps and gleefully comic moments that had us wiping away tears of laughter and joy.

We’re all looking forward to the remaining three performances – tonight at 7 pm, and Saturday and Sunday afternoon

Papageno (Aidan Keenan) and Papagena (Aurora Hannisian) perform a duet on opening night.

at 2 pm, at the First Baptist Church, 221 Cabot Street, Beverly, MA.  The North of Boston Arts Center invites you to enjoy the beautiful music, the marvelous costumes, and most of all, the enthusiasm of talented young performers putting a fresh spin on a classic. See you at the show!

“The Magic Flute” comes to life — with a little help from our friends

May 20, 2010 by

At NOBAC’s dress rehearsal this afternoon for “The Magic Flute,” the performers were transformed by costumes and makeup and the opportunity to rehearse with the orchestra; such is the magic of the stage. But not all the magic happens on stage. We are fortunate to have wonderful help behind the scenes from three talented young women who have worked with NOBAC on “The Magic Flute” this spring and “The Aristocats” last fall.

Jessica Brand is a graphic designer who keeps the NOBAC website looking so sharp and has created many of the props and sets for the shows. Ophelia Hathaway has done a marvelous job designing beautiful costumes, while Soks Gemma has become a real mentor and backstage guide to our students. Both Ophelia and Soks, who are students at Montserrat College of Art,  have also found the time to take onstage roles in our NOBAC youth productions.

Come see “The Magic Flute” this weekend to experience the beauty of Mozart’s music, the drama and comedy of the story, and the enthusiasm of our young performers. Shows are at 7 PM on Thursday and Friday, and at 2 PM on Saturday and Sunday. Visit http://www.thenobac.org for more information.

Cast of NOBAC's "The Magic Flute" offers preview of upcoming show.

This past Saturday, against a cloud of pink pear tree blossoms, the cast of NOBAC’s upcoming presentation of Mozart’s “The Magic Flute” put on a terrific preview show for the folks attending Beverly’s Pear Blossom Festival. It was a gorgeous, summer-like day, and NOBAC thanks everyone who stopped by to enjoy the show. There are photos posted by Dan Boschen here http://picasaweb.google.com/danielboschen/TheMagicFlute# , and there’s a short video clip of Carissa, our very own “Queen of the Night,” on Facebook at http://www.facebook.com/katevictoryhannisian?ref=profile#!/video/video.php?v=118222091532309&ref=mf

Our rehearsal schedule is getting busier as we get closer to the performance dates — we hope to see you at the show, which runs May 20 through 23, at the First Baptist Church on Cabot Street in Beverly, MA. Please see the North of Boston Arts Center website at http://www.thenobac.org for ticket information.
